Dereje Weldegeorgis is an Ethiopian-born artist and educator whose work bridges figurative painting, abstraction, and landscape. He earned a BFA in Painting from Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art and Design in 2012, and relocated to the United States in 2016, where he has continued an active studio practice and teaching career. His paintings explore memory, emotion, and the relationship between the human figure and the natural world through layered compositions, expressive color, and a balance of representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited in Ethiopia and internationally, including at the National Museum of Ethiopia.
Since 2019, Dereje has taught drawing, watercolor, and acrylic painting through art programs in the Washington, D.C. area. He enjoys working with students of all levels, helping them develop strong technical foundations while encouraging personal expression and creative exploration. At Yellow Barn Studio, Dereje invites students to discover painting as both a way of seeing and a means of connecting with their own unique artistic voice.
