Originally from West Virginia, William studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art under esteemed figurative painters before finishing with a master’s degree in architecture from Virginia Tech. For two decades he established his career in architectural practice working on projects near Alexandria, Virginia. Like many people during the great pandemic of 2020, William was reawakened with a need for being outdoors and creating and he began painting en plein air, completing paintings start to finish outdoors, observing the landscape with an emphasis on the effects of natural light and color.
He prefers rural and natural views where the materiality of paint can simultaneously depict the subject matter but also become the subject of surface and texture. The ever-changing light of the landscape gives William an endless amount of inspiration to paint from, particularly in the taiga-like mountains around his studio cabin in Canaan Valley, WV. Over the past couple of years William has been juried into regional plein air events, winning various awards and taking the opportunity to connect with fellow painters and patrons. His work can frequently be found at Canaan Valley Artisans Collective, WV, Gallery D’art Norfolk, VA and the Art League Gallery of the Torpedo Factory, Alexandria VA.
