Walter BartmanThe founder and director of the Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery, Walt Bartman teaches landscape, still life and figure painting classes and workshops, here and abroad. His career spans four decades. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Art History from American University and he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Belgium and Holland. His philosophy of painting centers on personal interpretation and the unique approach to the ordinary. For him, a great painting includes all the arts. He works with all levels of students and challenges them to ‘see’ more. Walt’s own work is representational in subject, but with an abstract approach to seeing and expressing his thoughts on canvas. He is a colorist and he shares his knowledge with his students.

It is the invisible that needs to be found, the clue is in the visible.

Vian Borchert is an established and renowned award-winning expressionist artist. V. Borchert has exhibited in many group and solo exhibitions within the USA and internationally for decades. Vian is a graduate and “Notable Alumni” from the Corcoran College of Art and Design George Washington University, Washington, DC. Vian considers her expressionistic and abstracted art as visual poems. Vian Borchert’s art has been on exhibit in prestigious places such as the United Nations General Assembly’s Public Lobby Gallery, NYC, and in “Art Basel Miami Beach” Spectrum Miami, 1stdibs Design Center in Chelsea, NYC and the LA Art Show. Vian‘s art is in private collections worldwide, embassies, and museums. Borchert exhibits in major world cities such as NYC, LA, DC, Miami, London, Rome and Berlin. Moreover, Vian Borchert has been attributed in revolutionizing the current contemporary abstract expressionist art movement, and a number of art styles originated from her unique vision such as the abstracted woods since the artist resides by the woods and the waterfall painterly blue canvases. Most notably her love for the big blue and her signature use of the color blue in her abstract paintings created new waves of abstraction in the art world. In this V. Borchert has singularly attributed immensely to the advancement of abstract art in the world. Borchert believes in the importance of a proper art education and advises her students and emerging artists not to take shortcuts nor copy other artists’ work and stay truthful to themselves. Borchert stresses on the need for budding artists to learn the basics of drawing and painting. Thus, Borchert teaches classes in Beginning to Intermediate Drawing and Painting at the Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo Park. V. Borchert’s art has been featured in numerous well regarded publications such as The Washington Post, The Flux Review,  Influential People magazine, Artpil, Elan magazine, Vie magazine, The Miami Art Scene, NPR’s Art Beat and others. Borchert has juried art exhibitions in the Washington DC area. Furthermore, Vian has extensive knowledge in art history, and she has worked in major museums such as the National Gallery of Art and the The Phillips Collection museum in Washington DC. Borchert teaches fine art classes in painting and drawing at the Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo Park.

Holly Buehler

Influenced by her Aunt Mary, Holly’s passion for the arts increased throughout her early years.  Later having received a BFA from Eastern Michigan University, she dove into the high-tech design world of the television industry. In recent years she has focused on the creative expression of painting.

Her painting “Autumn on the Potomac” won “Best in Show” 26th Annual Members Show, Friends of the Yellow Barn Studio. In 2021, the 27th Annual Members Show awarded her a “Honorable Mention” for the painting “Sunflower Time.”

Holly’s painting-inspired travels have taken her to Santorini, Greece and Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where she joined plein air workshops sponsored by the Yellow Barn. She constantly finds interesting places to paint around the DMV, and is always intent on finding that spark of beauty and atmosphere that awaits.

Ken Conley2024-02-16T20:52:52-05:00

Bio

Ken Conley was raised in northern Virginia. He earned a B.F.A. in painting with department and university honors from American University and an M.F.A. from Boston University with additional studies at the Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and at the New York Studio School with Stanley Lewis. He is highly experienced teaching college-level painting and drawing courses at all levels.

Before graduate school, Ken helped establish the early administration of the Washington Studio School and Courtyard Gallery. After graduate school, he returned to the WSS to teach as one of only two full-time faculty members and as co-chair of the board of directors.

Ken is a former assistant professor of art at Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, PA, and a former associate professor of art at Prince George’s Community College, Largo, MD, where he taught for over 15 years.

Teaching

Ken’s teaching philosophy is straightforward. All visual art, regardless of style is important and worthy of our consideration. Content, or expression, is the core of all art forms. The student’s development and integration of skills, knowledge, and significant practice are basic requirements. Learning to understand and articulate pictorial content is necessary for the continuous growth of the painter.

Directed practice is important because it helps us move forward. With it, the student artist learns to communicate and recognize their thoughts and feelings through their marks. The student can then better accept and reject sensations most relevant to their experiences with the subject and the needs of the pictorial structure.

Painting and Drawing

“You just don’t see it. You feel it.”

Ken’s paintings and drawings are emotive. His work is the result of strongly felt sensations from external stimulus captured in paint or charcoal.

“Stay curious about even the most mundane.”

“I want to continuously challenge myself to paint different subjects without any preconceived ideas about the outcome.”

“I want to learn something from every painting encounter. If I learn something new, if I’m truly open and curious, these experiences are imbedded in my painting process and become visible to the viewer”.

Winslow Homer said, “When you paint, try to put down exactly what you see. Whatever else you have to offer will come out anyway.”

Gavin Glakas grew up in Bethesda, MD, and started drawing about the time he started walking. He studied with Walt Bartman in high school and at Washington University in St. Louis and the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

After graduation, Glakas spent a year and a half working on Capitol Hill as a Senate staffer. He had planned to go to law school, but after an eight-month illness culminating in the removal of a tumor from his lung at the age of 24, he decided to pursue his lifelong ambition of a career as an artist.

Glakas began showing his work in galleries almost immediately and spent six years studying portrait and figure painting on Thursdays and Fridays.

His paintings hang in the permanent collections of the United States Capitol, the Virginia State Capitol, universities, museums and numerous other collections both public and private.

Glakas is represented by Principle Gallery in Alexandria, VA and Charleston, SC, Palm Avenue Fine Art in Sarasota, FL, and Hubert Gallery in New York.

He has won numerous honors for his artwork, including awards from the Portrait Society of America and the Butler Institute of American Art. His paintings have been featured on NBC News and in The Washington Post, as well as American Art Collector, Plein Air, International Artist, The American Scholar, Art Business News, The Strand and Elan magazines, and exhibited at mu- seums and galleries throughout the country.

Glakas teaches painting and drawing at the Yellow Barn Studio and lives in McLean, VA, with his wife and two sons.

Jennifer Hughes2024-02-16T22:12:08-05:00

After working in various media, including oil, acrylic, pastel and gouache, Jennifer discovered oil and cold wax painting. Cold wax and oil painting is a medium that encourages experimentation, exploration and a level of creativity like few other media. By blending cold wax with oil paint, as well as many other forms of pigment (powder pigment, oil sticks, graphite to name just a few), the artist can build and excavate layers, and create texture. The interplay of colors in the many layers of the paintings can create luminosity and depth that draws in the viewer. Cold wax and oil can be used in abstract art as well as more realistic art and portraiture. Rather than using paint brushes, most cold wax and oil artists use a variety of tools to apply the paint to the substrate including squeegees, brayers and palette knives (and the most flexible tool of all, fingers). The artist can also combine collage and other media in their works.

This relatively new painting media has been gaining in popularity and Jennifer’s goal is to create a robust cold wax and oil painting community by imparting her knowledge and experience in hands-on and fun classes. Teaching out of her home studio as well as the Torpedo Factory, Jennifer has been able to convert new and experienced artists to the joys and freedom of this media.

Gita Mirshahi2024-02-16T22:18:21-05:00

Gita MirshahiGita Mirshahi earned her BFA in drawing & sculpture from Trinity college and her MFA from George Washington University. She works in a wide range of two and three dimensional media – from drawing to print making and painting, to creating sculpture, ceramics or jewelry. Gita has focused of late on spontaneous, free flowing, vibrant paintings, which, though based on the physical world are near calligraphic abstractions. Each painting reflects her own personal brand of ‘automatic’ rhythms & shapes. She has taught many disciplines and her hallmark is helping the student develop their own vision and techniques. My joy in making art is launching in to uncharted waters, looking for the unexpected approach to the world around us & with in . This means taking risks, investing yourself in the process of discovery, and watching your subject reveal it self. See yourself in different light as you learn to paint with no inhibitions, under Gita’s generous tutelage.

Katherine Nelson2024-02-16T22:21:06-05:00

Katherine Nelson is an artist, educator, and juror based in the D.C./Baltimore region. She received a BS in Art Education from Skidmore College in 1985 and a Master of Arts in Drawing from SUNY Albany in 1990. Katherine, who was born in The Hague, has experienced many landscapes and cultures living in Europe, the Middle East and on both the East and West Coasts of the United States.

She has been featured in numerous solo, juried, and invitational exhibits in the USA and Europe including The US Embassy “HUB” in Brussels, Belgium, The Palais de Tokyo Museum, Paris, France, The National Cathedral in Washington, DC, The Albany Institute of History and Art, The Schenectady Museum, ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover” as well TV ads, CD, journal, and magazine covers. Nelson’s velvety, linear, and textural charcoal drawings explore meaningful connections deep within the current Grain Revival and depict agricultural slopes, saddles, and swales as hallowed space through views of heritage farm architecture.

Katherine has also been teaching art at all levels for the past 25 years. Katherine currently offers online teaching and has taught regional workshops in the DMV since 2014.

Artist Statement:
I travel to fascinating locations exploring fields, historic farms, grain stories, and dramatic lands. My approach to field research is just as much about seeking out adventures and making discoveries, as it is about creating art that will have a meaningful impact on the viewer. I draw primarily in charcoal constructing an interplay of lines, textures, and contrasts while simultaneously shining a light on the new grain revival that is weaving a tapestry of connections between people and places.
My drawings are metaphors for the human prospect. ‘Harvests’ to me are exhibitions that depict the land as hallowed space through views of heritage farm architecture and landscape vistas. Implicit rural values relate to the natural environment, hard work, and community, and are relevant anywhere.
I love charcoal because it is fluid, forgiving, mysterious and strong. I draw by layering dark velvety values and build textures that are obtained through an additive and subtractive process using a variety of charcoals, pastels, blenders, brushes and erasers. Recently, I began a new explorative journey in color pencils alongside my charcoal works creating a series of small colorful drawings. Embracing my immediate surroundings and drawing from ephemeral moments I strive create a sense of place within the artful viewpoint found in the every day close to home.

Samantha Stover grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Literature and Art History from McGill University and a Masters in Fine Art, cum laude, from the New York Academy of Art.

Throughout her academic studies in art, she focused her concentration on Drawing Techniques: historical methods and materials as well as figure-drawing exclusively from life. After an almost 10-year hiatus from fine art, she returned to the discipline with a renewed interest in the figure and the power of creative expression. Drawing also on her previous experience as a theatrical costume designer, she is influenced by the performative and communicative capacity of the human form and spirit. Her current work employs the practices of her traditional training to capture fleeting observations, emotions and memories.

Her work has been shown in galleries in Maryland, New York, and Berlin. Since moving back to the USA from Europe, she has been a Teaching Assistant in New York and an organizer of online art events.

Elisabeth Vismans2024-02-16T22:37:49-05:00

Elisabeth Vismans Listens, Guides and Inspires Creative Experiences.
She was born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and started to paint after a long international career in the corporate world in Rotterdam, Paris, Sydney, Düsseldorf and Nice. She is fluent in 4 languages, an Award-Winning Visual Artist, Certified Professional Life Coach, Certified NLP Practitioner and partners with Walter Reed Medical Center for therapeutic painting. She and her family moved from Germany to the US in 2000, and settled in Howard County, MD. In 2004 she became the proverbial empty nester and started looking for a way to give meaning to her life. One morning it dawned on her that she could now follow her life long passion and so she picked up a paint brush, registered for an art class and never looked back. That felt like “coming home”.
Now that she was finally doing what she was meant to be doing, she wanted to share this amazing feeling with others who were also in search of a purpose. She became a life coach and developed her own unique coaching program with paint (visual and verbal language combined). Teaching intuitive painting was the next step and from there she evolved to teaching painting flowers, visual journaling and abstract painting. In all her classes she works with the whole (mind-body) student, because she firmly believes that every painting is a problem to solve and therefore it is important to know what goes on in your head so you can quiet the mind and be more creative.
She knows all too well how it feels to start with painting later in life, and putting yourself in a vulnerable position, and so she is well equipped to help students to get over their initial fear and connect to their own painting style. Painting with intuition and enjoying the process is a major component of her teachings. She is also passionate about empowering women to find their passion and developed a unique coaching program where paint is being used as an extra modality. She also teaches 6-week Visual Journaling classes, where feelings are being expressed in images. This is a
deep, cathartic, and meaningful process guided by the inner wisdom. (Carl Jung started his visual journal the Red Book in 1910).
Elisabeth’s expressive painting style is ever evolving, she sure likes to push the boundaries and is always embracing a challenge. She draws her inspiration from nature and everything around her. Her medium of choice is oil paint, her art work is full of color, joy, energy and can be found in many private collections in the US and abroad.
Over the years she participated in many (solo and juried) shows around the country. Her latest show was in the Yellow Barn in November 2019.

James Vissari2024-02-16T22:38:42-05:00

“I am a visual storyteller. I am here capturing infatuation before the magic escapes and showing ephemeral as part of permanence. Making aesthetic interpretation in fine art according to taste then delivering it in its most immediate and pure visual representation with attention to personal influences about sustainable aesthetic value.”

James was born in Wheaton, Maryland and now resides in rural Poolesville, MD. He attended the Corcoran School of Art, Montgomery College, and the University of Maryland.

He has developed a drawing technique with pen and ink of candid images showing public places that exemplify modern culture.

He chooses mediums depending on the subject. His paintings are of many subject matters. His art transforms the ordinary into revealing objects of interest.

James has participated in many communities’ art programs. He became President of the Montgomery Art Association after serving as Vice President.

Ann Wallace2024-02-16T23:16:45-05:00

Ann Wallace holds a B.A.from the University of Massachusetts, a J.D. degree from Suffolk University Law School, and an L.L.M. from George Washington University School of Law. After law school, she worked as a criminal attorney for the United States Department of Justice. At the same time, she continued to pursue art as a student at the Yellow Barn Studio. From 2001 to 2013, she was a Yellow Barn Instructor teaching drawing and painting with oils, acrylics, gouache, and pastels. Thereafter, until 2019, she taught painting classes at Plaza Artists Materials in Rockville, Maryland. She is also a copyist at the National Gallery of Art.
Ann paints immediately or directly— “au premier coup” (at first stroke) or “alla prima”(at first attempt). When approaching still life paintings, she believes that the selection and arrangement of objects reveal the presence of the artist. In her portraits, she attempts to go beyond the likeness and focuses on the perceived character of the individual. And, when she is out in nature, she tries to capture the essence of the place—the movement of the sky and water; the character of the rocks, land, and trees; the intensity of the colors; and the transience of the light. Ann draws inspiration from artists like James McNeill Whistler, who prefer to evoke rather than define. She believes that a painting should not serve simply to showcase the technical prowess of the painter, but instead should allow the viewer to be an integral participant in the realization of the artist’s vision. She has had numerous solo exhibits, and her award-winning paintings are in private collections throughout the country and on permanent exhibition in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and the United States Department of Justice.

Marcie Wolf-Hubbard2024-02-16T23:19:32-05:00

Marcie Wolf-Hubbard received her B.A. from the University of Maryland in Studio Art and studied Fine Art and Illustration at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. Her paintings have been exhibited widely on the East Coast. She has illustrated for magazines and books and worked as a courtroom artist. Marcie is an instructor at Glen Echo Park, the Yellow Barn Studio and The Smithsonian. She is also a teaching artist in the community, working with children and adults including individuals with special needs and seniors with dementia.

Marcie and her husband, David Hubbard, are collaborating on a series of books of David’s short stories and poems and her encaustic paintings, which have inspired David’s writing. Poems From Within is the first book in the series.

Artist’s statement

I have always loved to draw. Like most artists, I look and take in what’s around me. For the past six years, I have been working in encaustic (hot wax) painting. Painting in encaustic highlights the lines and tonal quality of my charcoal drawings of the figure and nature. Up close, I see the texture on the surface, further emphasized by oilstick on the drawn lines and brushstrokes. Adding collage elements gives more texture, dimension and depth to the paintings. My drawing is an appreciation of the life, personality, spirit and beauty of humanity and nature.

Kimberly Yourick2024-02-16T23:21:15-05:00

Kimberly Yourick received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis, with a major in Metalsmithing. Kim is primarily a contemporary landscape oil painter, who works in plein air. She has exhibited in many local, national, and international exhibitions. As an instructor, she intends to encourage creativity and the joy of art through painting or other forms of expression. She has been trained in many different mediums and subject matter.
Her own landscape work shifts the traditional notion of plein air painting by encouraging color intensity that reaches beyond representational subject matter. Her intent is to engage the viewer’s senses in the highest form of color experience and to present symbolism that is associated with passage, safety, hope, happiness, and expectation that is free from cultural boundaries. Intense color vibration, and use of light becomes the focus of the work so that the viewer experiences the ecstasy, and joyfulness of a beautiful vision, which is much needed respite from daily struggles.
Her belief is that being an artist and creating art, is not limited to mastering technical skill but rather how the art transforms its audience, what story it tells, and what problem is solved. Therefore, artists and creatives live and work around us without identifying as “artists”. Their vision and work are equally as critical to the improvement of our lives. Being uplifted, feeling catharsis, and making connection to spirit is much more important than if the artist can draw or paint something that looks representational. Her hope is to help extract this type of expression from her students.
