Your gateway to the natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, Summerduck Studio is nestled in one of the Bay’s last authentic working fishing communities. Since 1984, thousands of artists and students have come to Summerduck to paint, learn, and share their love of art.
Summerduck offers classes in watercolor, oil, acrylic, and drawing, with a special emphasis on plein air painting. The island’s working harbors, marshes, historic skipjacks, and spectacular sunsets provide endless inspiration for artists.

2026 TILGHMAN WORKSHOPS

Join Walt Bartman at his studio on Tilghman Island for an inspirational plein air painting weekend. This workshop is for all levels of students and mediums. Lectures on drawing, color and composition, critiques, and demos will be included daily. Minimum age 16, accompanied by a parent. 3 sessions.

SCHEDULE

FRIDAY
10am: Meet at the Studio located at 21577 Bar Neck Cove Road, Tilghman, Maryland
There will be a lecture on composition and design.
12 – 3pm: Drawing demo and students drawing practice
3:30pm: Landscape Painting Demo on location at Knapps Narrows, behind the hotel along the water, usually under the gazebo. Students paint through the afternoon and sunset followed by optional group dinner at a local restaurant. Students will send photos of their paintings done on Friday to walt@yellowbarnstudio.net for a critique Saturday morning.

SATURDAY
10am: Meet at the Studio. Critique of Friday’s work. Lecture on color and developing a design.
Painting Boats Demo. Painting on location, including a morning, afternoon, sunset and optional night painting. Students will bring their paintings to the Studio at 5pm for a critique.
5pm: Optional Crab Feast $40 per person. Please bring cash, check, or you can use zelle (Alex Bartman 240-626-4981) or venmo (alex-bartman-3)
6:30pm: Paint the Sunset
9pm: Night Painting
Students will send photos of their paintings done on Saturday to walt@yellowbarnstudio.net, for a critique Sunday morning.

SUNDAY
10 am: Color Painting Demo
Students work on their own, finishing work. Bring all paintings for a critique at 3:30pm
3:30pm – 5pm: Final critique at the studio

MATERIALS LIST
Paint: Acrylic, Oil, and Watercolor: Burnt Sienna, Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Viridian Green or Pythalo Green, Cerulean Blue, and Ultramarine Blue, Pythalo Blue.

Mediums: Poppy Oil or Linseed oil for oil paint, Retarder for acrylics

Brushes: Filberts, Flats and Rounds # 4, #8 & #12 or larger. Recommended bushes: white bristle flats, Montgomery Brushes from Plaza Artist Materials in Bethesda, and Princeton Aspen Brushes.

Canvases: Bring a variety (6 at least) of canvases measuring, 9″x12″ or larger. 16″ x 20″ preferable. Panels over canvas are recommended for plein air painting.

Equipment: Portable easel, 11″ x 14′ or larger Palette, 11″ x 14″ or larger Sketchbook, Compressed Charcoal, Pencils, Erasers. water or mineral container, paper towels, drop cloth, Folding Chair, Sun Umbrella, Hat, Sunscreen, Bug off, Bungee cords, and tape. Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamsol or Turpenoid recommended)…we cannot use turpentine or any other solvent that releases fumes.

Please bring a water bottle and drink plenty of water, and watch for cars. In case of inclement weather with the threat of thunder or lightning, we will paint in a protected area.
